Sociology helps to examine the roles of individuals within society. There are many sociological perspectives within sociology. Marxist The Marxist perspective is an approach that was founded by Karl Marx. Karl Marx believed that individual behaviour is shaped by society.
They also believe that we live in a society that focuses more on capitalism where the entire purpose is to make profit for the ruling class. Another thing that Marxist believe in is that the working class live in false class consciousness, this means that they are not aware of the scale of exploitation being levelled against them.
According to Marx the only way to end this exploitation is to form a revolution which will get rid of the elite and make something more equal. A criticism of the Marxist perspective is that their view is very focused too much on social class inequalities, whereas the social class conditions have improved immensely over the years.
Even though there will always be inequality between the ruling classes and working class, legislations have decreased the possibilities of exploitation, for example workers have rights like changing things regarding their work patterns.
Another criticism is that the Marxist view are utopic as there will never be a system where everyone is absolutely equal. Functionalist The functionalist perspective was founded by Emile Durkheim. He believed that everything in society has a specific function. The functionalist perspective is based on a general consensus of conflict and agreement.
They believe that society is made up rules, norms and values that is imperative to its survival. The Functionalist theory consist of socialisation primary and secondary. Primary socialisation is the acceptance of learning attitudes, values and actions within the home, and secondary socialisation is the process of learning what is right and wrong outside of the home.
Role allocation is the that happens in education it is when students are judged based on their ability and suitability for a specific career pathway for example ensuring that the highest ranking jobs are undertaken by the most talented and qualified people Doctors, surgeons piolets etc.
A criticism of functionalism is that there is no recognition of difference by class, region or ethnic group they focus more on the cereal package family. Functionalist ideas almost portray humans as being autonomous and that only socialisation determines our lives.
They do not really see humans as the unpredictable beings, not possible to stray away from the predictable ideas that functionalists have of people. Feminist There are different groups of feminist such as liberal, radical and Marxist feminist. Radical feminist concentrate on the patriarchal structure of society.
This means that they do not want society to be controlled by men.
They believe that men are responsible for most of the problems in the world and that women can do a far better job of it. They want women to be more aware of how much they are being exploited by men. Liberal feminist are more concerned with gaining equality of opportunities for women through their own actions and choices.
They do this by campaigning for same job opportunities, becoming members of parliament, equal pay.Unit 4 Business Communication P1 Grading Criteria Explain different types of business information, their sources and purposes.
